Auricular (ear) acupuncture
David is a BSc. graduate of Napier University Edinburgh and is also fully certified and insured to practice auricular acupuncture.
Auriculotherapy is a treatment where the external ear is stimulated with needles, lasers or electro stimulation in order to have a beneficial effect on other parts of the body. Originally based on Chinese ideas of acupuncture, modern practice is based on medical research which suggests that auricular acupuncture helps stimulate the body’s own self healing systems leading to a possible decrease in symptoms.
There are a potential 200 acu-points on the external ear, each acu point relates to an area of the body. Stimulating the acu-point triggers an electrical impulse from the ear, via the brain to the area of the body being treated.

Advantages

Who can it help?

Addictions
For those struggling to give up tobacco, alcohol, drugs – this is a time of great stress and anxiety.
Auricular acupuncture can help by stimulating the brain to increase the flow of endorphins (natural opiates) into the body which creates a sense of calm, relieves anxiety, creates a sense of well being, reduces pain and cleanses the body of the poisons and toxins which make us feel ill and psychologically depressed.
Appetite control
As part of a weight reduction programme where diet, exercise and other contributing factors are being observed auricular acupuncture can reduce anxieties, help maintain a harmonious content mind and reduce the bodies craving for eating.
Reactions and side effects
There are no known long term adverse effects of auricular acupuncture.
Clients may experience a slight sensation or discomfort when the needle is inserted, this is temporary and quickly subsides. If the client has a fear of needles, or the ear is particularly sensitive, painless options are available.
The client may experience a sensation of lethargy after treatment or a temporary increase in symptoms – this will dissipate quickly and may be seen as an indication that the body’s self regulating mechanisms are active.
There are similarities between ear acupuncture and reflexology, reflexology and ear acupuncture may work well together in clearing chronic energy blockages.
